Internet emerges as the next medium for film piracy.

Till few years ago, the west was reeling under the menace of piracy of movies, but now piracy has invaded india–the largest film producer of the world–as well and has started pinching the profit margins of the film producers and the industry.

The Rs 440 billion ($11 billion)indian entertainment industry is trying really hard to curb piracy and the government and the industry have taken several measures to beat the pirates. As all the other traditional measures seem to have failed, piracy has again raised its head thanks to proliferation of internet.

With penetration of the high-speed broadband connectivity available at affordable cost, peer to peer(P2P) sites have made movie’s piracy an easy task for the users.Latest Hollywood blockbusters are being shared through the net easily. For this ,again technlogy is to be blamed as free software easily available on the internet convert a whole DVD into an approximate size of 700MB within a matter of 30 minutes.

These movies as they are commonly know as ripped DVDS can be uploaded on a P2P or a sharing/storage site from where anybody in the world can download the whole movie in just a matter of 1 hour using a broadband connection.

Though,Indian entertainment is taking actions to counter this latest threat from the Internet and have started releasing films simultaneously in theatres and on their respective websites. The first one to do so is Rajshri Productions,Which released “Vivah”in that manner. For few days the film was on a free view basis following which it has sold online for Rs.400($10) and within nine months more than 6,500 copies were sold via downloads alone.

In future piracy is expected to turn worse as digital content will have more takers once the 3G services are rolled out in india. As of today,India has over 220 million mobile users and within the next month india will surpass the US.
