Gmail’s New Contacts Manager with Improved User Interface
Google released a new version of Contacts Manager for Gmail today which focus mainly on simpler contact management in the cloud and a Contacts experience that is consistent with the rest of Gmail.
New features include keyboard shortcuts that mirror Gmail’s keyboard shortcuts, a sort by last name filter, faster editing options, autosaving and custom labels so that users can add their own fields to contact records. Perhaps most notably, the Contacts section looks and feels exactly like the Gmail inbox.
- Keyboard shortcuts (go to Contacts and hit “?” for the full list)
- Sort by last name (look under “More actions”)
- Custom labels for phone numbers and other fields
- The ability to undo changes you’ve just made
- Automatic saving
- Structured name fields, so you can adjust titles, suffixes, and other name components
- A bigger, more prominent notes field
With the Contacts rollout, Google engineers have also slightly refreshed Gmail’s appearance. For example, the new Contacts section of Gmail is now accessible from a shifted upper left-hand menu, and there’s an updated “Compose mail” button that better aligns with Gmail’s button branding.
