Microsoft rejoices: Windows XP use drops

The biggest danger to Windows 7 and Windows Vista isn’t Mac OS X or Linux — it’s Windows XP, whose hard-core fans refuse to give up the aging operating system. But it looks as if XP may finally be on the way out, which is good news for Microsoft.

Computeworld reports that according to the Web measurement company Net Applications

Windows XP’s share of the OS usage market fell 1.1 percentage points during August, tying its November 2008 record drop.

At the same time, Vista and Windows 7 use was up, Vista by 0.9 percent, and Windows 7 by 0.3 percent. Windows XP is still dominant, though, with 71.8 percent use, compared to 18.8 percent for Vista, and 1.2 percent for Windows 7. Mac OS X use has stalled, with 4.9 percent share.

XP’s continuing dominance presents a serious problem for Microsoft. Enterprises staying with XP means they’re not paying for upgrades to Vista or Windows 7. As for consumers who opt to stay with XP, the problem isn’t really upgrade revenue, because consumer upgrades are a drop in the bucket. The real problem is that XP users don’t buy new PCs, and so Microsoft is losing out on new sales.

I think that Windows 7 will go a long way towards solving the problem for Microsoft. It’s gotten a far batter reception than Windows Vista did, so enterprises won’t shy away from it. And XP PCs are starting to look long in the tooth, so consumers will most likely be ready to get new hardware — and new versions of Windows.

What is Semantic Web?

Today we here more about Semantic Web or Web 3.0. But most of my friends are not able to grab what is semantic web or what’s the specialty of web 3. Semantics is the study of meaning. So Semantic Web means a Web with meaning, got confused? Don’t worry I’ll explain.

semantic-web

In Web 1 the scope of web pages are to just give out the information to the viewers as we see in TVs. But in Web 2.0 WebPages became dynamic in behavior, they provide information and also accepts data from the viewers and produce results based on those data. The current version of Web we are using is Web 2.0. In Web 2 the search engines use the keywords in the WebPages to show the results of the search query. That means the contents are index by means of keywords or tags, but not by the meaning.

Web 3.0 provides a better efficient searching of the web using the semantics of the content in the pages. That means the search engines work not with the keywords we use to search, but with the meaning of the search query we gave. So the main and most important feature of Web 3.0 is Semantic Web. I think you have got a rough idea about what I am talking about. It will be clearer if you see the example below.

Imagine I am going to Texas. And I want to know about the hotels, tourists spots etc there. In the present condition if I search the term ‘I am going to Texas’, I get the results page showing the websites containing the keywords I searched, but not useful for me. But in Semantic Web the search engine understands the semantics, that is the meaning of the search query and give results based on the semantics of the query. I think that might be more useful for me.

But some scientist thinks that implementing a semantic web is not possible as the semantic web need huge engineering work. But as always do there are some who thinks anything is possible if there is a will. Let’s wish to make Semantic Web a reality

How To Create A Torrent File And Upload It

In this tutorial I will show you how to create and upload a torrent file step by step using a freeware called utorrent. It is also important that you understand a little about how torrents work. Torrents are the best way to share files. To download a torrent file you need a torrent client like utorrent, or bittorrent etc.

When you download a torrent you are downloading direct from other people like yourself, there are no central servers. People who have a full copy of the files and are uploading them are called ‘seeds’. People who have part of the files and are downloading them are called ‘leechers’ or ‘peers’. Peers also upload as they download.

Finally, if you are planning to upload a torrent you must make sure that you will be able to seed it for long enough for people to download a full copy of the files from you.

Lets get started:

01. Download the utorrent from here, utorrent or from here, all other version for creating and downloading the torrent files.
It doesn’t need installation, just execute the package.

02. Now when you open the utorrent and click the icon shown below:
create new torrent

Or you can click Ctrl+N or go to ‘File -> Create New Torrent…’ under file menu.

03. A box will appear as shown below. If you are to upload a single file then click ‘Add file’ (1).
If you are uploading a folder with 2 or more files in it then click ‘Add directory’ (2).
Here I’ll add a directory, but the principle is just the same if you are uploading a single file.
upload a single file or a directory

04. Now browse to the folder which you want to upload. Then click ‘OK’.

05. Now comes the most important part. You now have to fill the URLs of the trackers you wish to use.
urls of the trackers

They are of two types:
a> Public trackers [accessible by everyone]
b> Private trackers [available only to private members]

A list of few public trackers are listed below:

Manual Removal Intruction Of Gphone.exe

Gphone.exe is a file that an instant-message worm infects. This worm spreads through Google chat and Yahoo! Messenger. This “Gphone.exe” worm disables your antivirus security software, and downloads more crapware onto your PC.

Worms are virus-like badware with destructive codes. Worms are able to mutate, or replace their own code by automatically, which makes worms very dangerous, difficult to find, and hard to delete. Similar to viruses, worms can spread to the other computers by secretly and automatically emailing themselves to other Internet users in your address book. The main difference between worms and viruses is that a worm wil replace your computer files rather than simply inserting their code into your files.

How to manually remove Gphone.exe

To remove Gphone.exe spyware you must block Gphone.exe sites, stop and remove processes, unregister DLL files, search and delete all other Gphone.exe files and registry utility. Follow the Gphone.exe detection and removal instructions below.

The most typical software removal method is to remove Gphone.exe by using “Add or Remove Programs” service. However there may be hidden Gphone.exe files, running processes and registries in your computer, so Gphone.exe may recreate all other files after reboot.

How To Delete Registry Entries

How to delete registry entries?

1. What is the Registry?

Windows Registry is a collection of records of all system settings, hardware settings and software settings. It is a part of Windows operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 9x, Windows CE, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows Millennium.
The Registry is essential for Windows to function normally. Every change made to a machine reflects on the Registry, but every change made on the Registry influences computer’s work as well.

2. Why is it important to delete malicious registry entries?

Computer’s performance can be affected badly with a single deleted or modified registry entry. It is the reason why the most majority of malwares make some changes on the Windows Registry.
Malwares usually employs Registry to run malicious files every time a computer boots and to change homepage of web browsers. The Registry may also be used for other malicious purposes. You have to delete malicious registry entries or to restore the default ones; otherwise the malware won’t leave your computer. Even if you delete all the malicious files, the settings saved on the Registry may restore the malware or interrupt normal use of a PC.
Security tools usually take care of malicious registry entries. However, new computer parasites appear every day and there is no universal software that could detect and delete all the threats.

3. Things to consider BEFORE removing registry entries.

Every modification made on the Windows Registry influences how a computer functions; this is why the Registry should be handled with caution. Removing malicious registry entries and modifying values of regular entries is a risky and complicated task. Modifying the Registry should be avoided unless there is a serious reason.
If a wrong entry is removed or useful setting is changed, the computer might crash and the software installed on board might be corrupted. Set a System Restore point in advance of modifying the registry in order to avoid data loss. Use anti-spyware and anti-virus programs before changing Windows registry manually; this way saves your time and efforts.

4. How to delete registry entries?

a) Open Registry Editor.

Click the “Start” button and choose the “Run” option. Type “regedit” in the “Open” field and click the “OK” button.

b) Navigate to find the needed registry key and value.

Registry Editor is divided into two panels. The left panel is dedicated to navigation and the right one is for displaying values of selected keys.

c) Select the value to modify it.

Select the value you want to edit, click the right mouse button on it and choose the “Modify” option. You can also reach the “Modify” option by clicking “Edit” on the top menu. You can modify the value by double-clicking it.

Enter the new value

d) Find the value using the steps above and delete it.

Select the value you want to edit, click the right mouse button on it and choose the “Delete” option. Warning! Make sure you delete malicious entries!

e) You may need to add a new value or a new key to the Windows registry.

Click “Edit” option on the top menu, choose option “New” and then choose a type for your entry.

f) You may need to export certain key or value from the registry.

Choose an object, click the right mouse button on it and choose the “Export” option from the menu.

Type a name for the exported file and save the file as a *.reg file.

g) You can import missing or new values and keys.

Click on the “File” option on the top menu, choose the “Import” option and then select a file to import it to the Registry.

h) Close the Registry Editor and reboot a computer for changes to take an effect.

Windows Upgrade Advisor – Is My PC Ready To Install Windows 7

If you’re thinking of installing Windows 7 but are wondering whether your machine can safely run the new OS or not, Microsoft has just released a handy tool to test your setup: Windows Upgrade Advisor.

Download and install the software (I’m not sure why it can’t be a standalone .exe), make sure all the devices you normally use are plugged in, and hit ‘Start check.”

windowsupgradeadvisor

Windows Upgrade Advisor will then take a few minutes to scan your hardware and let you know whether your machine is ready for Windows 7 or, if not, what action you need to take. As you can see in the screenshot, because my machine is running XP, Upgrade Advisor is recommending backing up all of the data on it, as it will require a clean install of Windows 7.

The hardware requirements of Windows 7 are not much more onerous than those of Vista, so even fairly old machines should be able to run it. However, it’s useful to have a tool to check before committing to the upgrade.

Windows Upgrade Advisor is still in beta (so may still have some bugs) and is free to download and use.

Automatically Check Rapidshare, Megaupload and FileFactory Link Status in Firefox

We all use file hosts like Rapidshare and Megaupload these days. Most of the data hosted on these file hosts are in various parts. Sometimes, due to illegal activity of the hosted files or due to no download for a long time, these files get automatically deleted from the servers. Thus, it becomes very annoying when you have downloaded most of the files and come to find that one of the file links is either dead or blocked by Rapidshare due to possible illegal contents in the file(s).

That is when link checkers come in handy. Rapidshare provides free link checking facility called Rapidshare Checker at their homepage. It is, therefore, advisable to check the integrity of the links before starting to download files from the file hosts. But, it is cumbersome to check the links every time on their homepage. Today, I’m going to show you a method (for Firefox users only) on how to automatically let Firefox check the integrity of links of various file hosts while you visit the page with download links.

Method 1
1. Download Greasemonkey add-on and install it in your Firefox.

2. Download Rapidshare Links Checker User Script from here and install the User script using GreaseMonkey.

3. Restart Firefox

Now, whenever you go to a webpage that contains Rapidshare, Megaupload, Filefactory, etc links, this User Script will come into play. If it finds dead links, it’ll have an X icon at the end of the link and a checkmark icon for a valid working link.
